Lucknow, February 20: Rahul Gandhi was welcomed by Congress leaders and supporters upon his arrival in Lucknow. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha is in the city to register his statement in a case related to comments made against Home Minister Amit Shah at the Sultanpur MP/MLA court.
Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh confirmed that Rahul Gandhi traveled from Delhi to Lucknow and will head directly to the Sultanpur court to participate in the proceedings. After his court appearance, he will return to Lucknow before heading back to Delhi.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Ajay Rai also confirmed Rahul Gandhi’s personal attendance in court. He stated that today’s date is significant, and Rahul Gandhi will appear in person. Rai noted that a large number of party workers and supporters are gathering to meet him.
Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra Mona described the entire situation as politically motivated. She asserted that attempts are being made to entangle Rahul Gandhi in legal troubles across the country. Despite this, she emphasized the party’s complete trust in the judiciary, stating that all senior leaders and workers stand firmly by him.
Party leaders maintain that this is merely a part of the legal process, and they are proceeding with full respect for the law.
It is worth noting that the court had granted a final opportunity for appearance on January 6. Rahul Gandhi did not attend the court on that date, as his lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, requested more time due to his presence in Kerala.
This case is linked to statements made during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. During a press conference in Bengaluru on May 8, 2018, Rahul Gandhi allegedly made controversial remarks about Amit Shah. Subsequently, BJP leader and former cooperative bank president Vijay Mishra filed a defamation suit on August 4, 2018.
