New Delhi, February 11: A heated exchange erupted in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday during the discussion of the 2026 Union Budget. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi leveled serious allegations against the central government, claiming that the Prime Minister has compromised India’s energy security and surrendered the country to foreign powers. His remarks were met with strong opposition from the ruling party.
Gandhi accused the government of disgracefully compromising India’s interests during trade negotiations with the United States. He described this move as “nonsense,” asserting that the government has shown undue deference to former President Donald Trump on various issues related to agriculture, IT, data, and public interests.
In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju objected to Gandhi’s statements, labeling them as “absurd” and emphasizing that criticism should be constructive. Rijiju demanded the removal of unparliamentary language from the proceedings. The presiding member, Jagdambika Pal, also urged Gandhi to avoid offensive language. While Gandhi acknowledged this, he continued to press the government.
The situation escalated in the House as opposition members supported Gandhi’s claims of “surrender,” while ruling party members continued to protest.
Gandhi further asserted that this government has sold out the country, farmers, the IT sector, and energy security, completely bowing to the United States.
Rijiju retaliated, stating, “No one has been born who can sell this country.” He affirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the strongest leader India has ever had.
Gandhi also targeted Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, criticizing the India-U.S. trade agreement and alleged tax exemptions for foreign cloud service companies, claiming they are against the country’s economic and strategic interests. He quipped, “The finance minister is smiling; she loves to smile. Has our data been treated the same way as the big companies that received 20 years of tax holidays?”
