Rafael Jodar Reaches Quarterfinals at Madrid Open, Set to Face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner

Madrid, April 29: Spanish player Rafael Jodar has made history by reaching the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open for the first time in his career. On Tuesday, he defeated Vit Kopriva with a score of 7-5, 6-0, securing his spot in the final eight. The 19-year-old will now face world number one Jannik Sinner for the first time.

Jodar is now the sixth teenager to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament this decade. He is also the fourth wild card player in the history of the Madrid Open to reach this stage.

In a statement on the ATP website, Jodar expressed his excitement: “I am very happy with my level of play today and my performance in this tournament. Playing at home in front of so many people I know who came to support me is very special. I am very excited to play another match tomorrow. It’s another opportunity. I need to recover well and prepare as much as possible for the match, as it will also be a tough one.”

With powerful shots, Jodar has dominated his opponents over the past month. He has won 12 of his last 13 matches, including his first tour-level trophy in Marrakech and a semifinal appearance at the ATP 500 in Barcelona.

In Madrid, Jodar achieved his first top-10 victory against Alex de Minaur. He also triumphed over fellow 19-year-old Joao Fonseca and Jesper de Jong. On Tuesday, it took him just 80 minutes to defeat Kopriva in the sun-soaked Manolo Santana Stadium.

Jodar saved both break points against Kopriva and secured his victory with strong baseline shots. Fans have witnessed his aggressive style before, particularly during his participation in the Next Gen ATP Finals last December.

Currently, Jodar is ranked 34th in the PIF ATP live rankings. His next challenge will be against Jannik Sinner, who is aiming to become the first man in history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles. Sinner advanced to this stage by defeating Cameron Norrie in the fourth round on Tuesday.
