
New Delhi: In May 2025, a startling event unfolded in Canada’s Quebec province when Lake Rouge suddenly disappeared. Initially considered a rare natural occurrence, this incident has now drawn global attention following detailed scientific studies and satellite data analysis.
At the time of the lake’s abrupt drying, locals viewed it as an unusual but isolated event. However, months later, satellite imagery and scientific scrutiny provided a clearer understanding of the phenomenon, making it a subject of interest among researchers and the international media.
NASA’s Detailed Satellite Study
The most significant scientific insight came from NASA’s Earth Observatory in a report titled “The Disappearance of Lake Rouge,” published on 13 July 2025. Using high-resolution images captured by the Landsat-9 satellite’s OLI-2 sensor, researchers found that Lake Rouge lost nearly all its water between 29 April and 14 May 2025. While images from June 2024 showed the lake fully intact, those from June 2025 revealed a dry and barren lakebed.
Sudden Water Drainage Explained
NASA scientists explained that the lake’s water did not evaporate gradually but drained suddenly. The water carved a new natural channel, flowing roughly 10 kilometres to a nearby lake. This rapid outflow is known in geology as an “outburst flood,” a phenomenon commonly seen in glacial lakes but extremely rare in ordinary lakes.
Further satellite-based analyses published by space and science platforms in early August 2025 corroborated NASA’s conclusions. These reports indicated that the lake’s natural banks and soil had weakened, and increased water pressure from heavy snowmelt caused the sudden collapse, disrupting the lake’s equilibrium.
Environmental Concerns and Global Debate
Following these scientific findings, questions have arisen about whether the event should be seen solely as a natural disaster or if human factors like deforestation, past forest fires, and climate change contributed to it. The disappearance of Lake Rouge has thus evolved beyond a local environmental incident to become part of the broader global discussion on climate change and ecological imbalance.
