New Delhi: The central government has approved major infrastructure projects for Punjab, announcing the construction of rail overbridges (ROBs) at Doraha and Dhuri. Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, shared this update on the social media platform X, calling it a milestone in Punjab’s infrastructure development.
Bittu described these projects as crucial for boosting Punjab’s economic growth beyond simply connecting roads. He highlighted that these long-pending projects, delayed due to political reasons, are now receiving priority from the central government. He added that years of public protests and demonstrations had pushed for this approval, and construction work is expected to begin soon.
The combined cost of these projects is estimated at Rs 124 crore, which will help resolve longstanding traffic problems in both areas. The Doraha ROB, located in Ludhiana district near level crossing number 164A on the Ambala-Ludhiana rail section, will be built at a cost of Rs 70 crore. Currently, the railway gates close frequently for passing trains, causing traffic jams and long waiting times. The new bridge is expected to ease road traffic, save time, and reduce accidents.
In Dhuri, Sangrur district, a ROB will be constructed for Rs 54 crore in the non-interlocked crossing area of the Bathinda section. The general arrangement drawing (GAD) for this project has already been approved. Dhuri’s railway gates often close for hours, dividing the city and severely affecting daily activities such as schooling and business. This bridge will directly benefit over one lakh residents by improving traffic flow and connectivity.
These projects mark a significant step in strengthening Punjab’s infrastructure. The ROBs are expected to enhance traffic management, support trade and transportation, and simplify everyday life for local residents. The central government’s initiative is seen as a major contribution to the state’s development. Ravneet Singh Bittu extended his heartfelt congratulations to the people of Punjab, emphasizing that these improvements will accelerate economic progress.
