Amritsar, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Authorities in Punjab have made significant strides in combating illegal arms trafficking. The Amritsar rural police recently uncovered an international network involved in the supply of illegal weapons and explosives.
Punjab’s Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, announced the breakthrough on his official social media account. He stated, “In a major success, the Amritsar rural police have dismantled a network supplying illegal arms and explosives. One suspect has been arrested, and an AK-47 rifle, magazine, ammunition, and two hand grenades were seized.”
Initial investigations suggest that the arrested individual has connections with traffickers operating abroad. There are concerns that this shipment was intended to incite unrest in Punjab or facilitate a significant criminal act.
The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Harinda police station in Amritsar under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Explosive Substances Act. Intensive questioning of the suspect is underway to uncover the entire network and identify any further connections.
Punjab police have been on high alert regarding cross-border arms smuggling in recent months. Incidents of weapons and grenades being delivered via drones have been increasingly reported. This operation by the Amritsar rural police is viewed as a crucial step in addressing the issue.
DGP Gaurav Yadav emphasized in his post that the Punjab police are committed to closely monitoring illegal arms trafficking and taking stringent action against those involved in the illicit supply chain. Authorities are currently working to trace the origins of the seized AK-47 and grenades and determine their intended recipients in Punjab. Intelligence agencies have also been informed about the case.
