Patiala, May 12: As Punjab gears up for the upcoming assembly elections, Minister Balbir Singh from the Bhagwant Mann government has emphasized the importance of democracy in elections. He stated that elections have occurred in the past and will continue in the future. “We will contest and win the elections,” he asserted.
In a recent conversation in Patiala, Singh criticized the central government for the recent raids conducted by the CBI at the Punjab Vigilance Bureau office in Mohali. He accused the central government of executing a ‘surgical strike’ targeting a Rajya Sabha member and a minister. Singh claimed they were pressured to either join the BJP or face imprisonment. While one MP succumbed to fear and joined the BJP, the other minister, who remained steadfast, ended up in jail. He warned that such ‘surgical strikes’ are no longer effective, and the central government is planning a “full-scale war” against them.
Singh also referenced the SIR process, alleging that millions of votes were manipulated across the country. He expressed discontent with Prime Minister Modi’s recent appeal to citizens to reduce car usage and stop buying gold, arguing that this would negatively impact the livelihoods of 20 to 30 million people. “It’s like kicking them in the stomach,” he stated. He questioned why rallies are still being held if car usage is to be minimized, highlighting the struggles faced by private sector workers and the lack of attention to farmers’ issues.
Leaders from various opposition parties, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, have also criticized PM Modi’s appeal, suggesting that the government shifts responsibility onto the public while evading its own obligations.
