New Delhi, August 12: The Punjab Kings, two-time runners-up in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have commenced a five-day off-season training camp at the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. This initiative aims to enhance players’ individual skills ahead of the 2027 season of the tournament, which features ten teams.
The camp, which began on August 11, focuses entirely on skill development. Players are given dedicated time to work on specific aspects of their game, away from the pressures of match day.
Participants in the camp include wicketkeeper-batsman Prabhsimran Singh, batting all-rounder Shashank Singh, left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Harpreet Brar, batting all-rounder Paila Avinash, leg-spinner Praveen Dubey, and middle-order batsman Nehal Wadhera.
The training is being conducted under the supervision of the franchise’s coaching staff, with assistant coach Trevor Gonsalves overseeing daily drills at the stadium. This setup allows the support staff to work closely with players at various stages of their careers.
This initial camp is the first in a series of off-season training programs planned by the franchise management to keep the team prepared and fit for the upcoming season. Additional camps focusing on skill enhancement and fitness conditioning will be organized in the coming months, as the franchise aims to build a strong foundation for the next IPL season.
In IPL 2026, under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, the Punjab Kings started strong with six wins and one ‘no result’ in their first seven matches. However, they faced defeats in their next six games. Despite winning their final league match against Lucknow Super Giants, the Punjab Kings could not secure a playoff spot, finishing fifth in the points table.
Other franchises are also conducting off-season camps for their players. The 2008 champions, Rajasthan Royals, have trained some of their players at their high-performance center in Talegaon, while the 2016 winners, Sunrisers Hyderabad, held a short skill and fitness camp in Chennai. The 2020 runners-up, Delhi Capitals, organized a camp for their domestic players at the Just Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, which also included trials.
