
Chandigarh, April 17: The Punjab government has recently sent the ‘Jagat Jyot Shri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill 2026’ to Governor Gulab Chand Kataria for approval. This bill aims to enforce strict actions against cases related to the disrespect of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which was unanimously passed in the state assembly.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced this development on the social media platform X. In his post, he stated, βThe act passed in the assembly against the disrespect of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji has been sent to the Governor for signature.β
The bill was passed on April 13 in the Punjab Assembly with the consensus of all parties. Its primary objective is to prevent incidents that insult religious texts and create social unrest.
The amended law includes very stringent provisions. If an individual is found guilty of disrespecting Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, they will face life imprisonment, meaning they will remain behind bars until death. Additionally, a hefty fine of up to 2.5 million rupees is also stipulated.
The bill clarifies that investigations into such cases can only be conducted by gazetted officers or those of higher rank. Furthermore, the law does not permit any form of compromise or settlement in these matters.
The government asserts that this law will send a strong message to society that any negligence or insult related to religious sentiments will not be tolerated. All eyes are now on whether the Governor will grant approval to this bill.
