New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu addressed the 16th National Voters’ Day celebrations held in New Delhi, emphasising that voting reflects citizens’ trust in the democratic process. She stated that the strength of India’s democracy lies not just in the large number of voters but also in the depth of democratic spirit. This includes senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and residents of remote areas, all exercising their voting rights.
Recognising Inclusive Participation
The President praised the vigilant voters and the Election Commission for their dedicated efforts in inspiring widespread participation in the electoral process. She noted that public involvement brings the spirit of democracy to life at the grassroots level. The Election Commission has undertaken numerous initiatives to ensure no voter is left behind, organising various awareness programmes to encourage voter engagement.
Voting Beyond Political Expression
President Murmu highlighted that voting is more than just a political act; it is a reflection of citizens’ confidence in democratic elections and a means for people to express their aspirations. The constitutional right to vote for all adult citizens, without discrimination, embodies the principles of political and social justice and equality. The ‘one person, one vote’ principle enshrined in the Constitution represents the framers’ strong faith in the wisdom of the public. Indian voters have upheld this faith, earning India a distinguished place as a vibrant democracy globally.
Emphasising Responsible Voting
While affirming the importance of voting rights, the President urged all adult citizens to exercise their franchise responsibly, keeping in mind their constitutional duties. She expressed hope that voters would strengthen India’s electoral system by voting free from temptation, ignorance, misinformation, propaganda, and bias, guided by their conscience.
