Mumbai, February 25: President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the nationwide campaign ‘Save Lives and Build a Healthy India’ at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai, initiated by PD Hinduja Hospital. In her address, the President emphasized that the health of citizens is a collective responsibility. She urged all stakeholders to ensure that even the poorest individuals receive timely and appropriate medical care.
The President praised the Indian government’s efforts in the health sector over the past decade. She highlighted the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the world’s largest health insurance program, which provides coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per year for nearly 12 crore families. More than 1.8 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are delivering health services across the country.
Programs like Mission Indradhanush, the TB Free India campaign, and the Sickle Cell Anemia Eradication Mission are making significant contributions to disease prevention. The increase in MBBS and postgraduate seats, along with the establishment of new AIIMS and medical colleges, has improved the availability of doctors and paramedical staff.
The President stressed the importance of emergency medical services, stating that timely medical intervention can save many lives. Under the Prime Minister’s Relief Scheme, accident victims can receive cash treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh. Ambulances, trauma centers, and awareness campaigns also play a crucial role in saving lives. The ‘Save Lives and Build a Healthy India’ campaign is a significant step in this direction.
Healthy citizens are the foundation of a strong nation. The President stated that healthcare is an integral part of nation-building. Providing affordable and world-class health services should be our shared mission. She discussed the role of technology and artificial intelligence (AI), noting that the India AI mission is promoting innovation in the health sector. The role of AI is expected to grow in the future, and we must be prepared for it.
The President described India as a leading pharmaceutical producer, with domestically manufactured medicines treating people worldwide. However, we still rely on imports for many medical devices and essential drugs, which places a financial burden on the common people. The Make in India and PLI schemes are boosting indigenous production. She called on the medical and business sectors to encourage research, innovation, and startups.
Referring to the vision of a developed India by 2047, the President stated that healthy citizens are fundamental to achieving this goal. Through collective efforts, India will receive excellent healthcare services and emerge as a global healthcare hub. Through this campaign, PD Hinduja Hospital has committed to promoting health awareness, emergency services, and inclusive healthcare.
