New Delhi, May 6: Praveen Khandelwal, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has sharply criticized Mamata Banerjee’s refusal to resign as Chief Minister following her party’s defeat. He stated that Banerjee’s authoritarian nature has become evident not only to the people of West Bengal but to the entire nation.
In a conversation with reporters, Khandelwal remarked, “These are fascist individuals who do not respect the Constitution. Mamata Banerjee’s authoritarian side is now clear to everyone, not just the people of West Bengal.”
He pointed out that until recently, these leaders were invoking the Constitution. Today, Banerjee and opposition leaders mock it. Khandelwal emphasized, “Democracy demands respect for the mandate given by the people. In contrast, leaders like Stalin of DMK and Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala promptly resigned. Banerjee’s statement of ‘I will not resign’ clearly indicates that these are fascist forces clinging to power, which democracy does not allow.”
Khandelwal further stated, “We all know that Mamata Banerjee has been involved in political theatrics. The drama she has been performing over the past 10-15 days has been witnessed by the entire nation. India is not a ‘banana republic’ where anyone can make arbitrary decisions. India has its own Constitution and a defined system.”
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan commented on Banerjee’s refusal to resign, saying, “Mamata Banerjee’s malicious misconduct and her aggressive stance against resigning is a betrayal of democratic principles. It is a direct attack on our constitutional values.”
He added, “This is a gross violation of the public’s trust and mandate. Most importantly, Banerjee’s misconduct is a severe insult to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Her disgraceful remarks only reveal her dictatorial mindset, which has characterized her 15 years of chaotic governance, leading the people of West Bengal to oust her from power.”
