Patna, August 3: The counting of votes for the much-discussed Bankipur Assembly by-election is underway at AN College in Patna. As of the 26th round, the Jan Suraj Party has established a clear lead. Party leader and candidate Prashant Kishor has maintained his early advantage throughout the counting process.
According to the Election Commission’s data, Kishor is ahead by 15,864 votes after the 26th round. Neeraj Kumar Sinha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trails closely behind, while Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Rekha Kumari is in third place, lagging by 41,633 votes.
With the lead holding steady, excitement is palpable at the Jan Suraj state office in Patna. Celebrations have commenced, with supporters applying colored powders to each other in joy and exchanging congratulations for a potential victory. The atmosphere is charged with chants of support.
Current trends indicate a tight contest primarily between Jan Suraj and the BJP, with the RJD candidate consistently falling behind. However, the final results will only be declared after all 31 rounds of counting are completed.
Voting for the Bankipur by-election took place on July 30, with a recorded turnout of 34.30%. Initially, a triangular contest was anticipated among the BJP, Jan Suraj, and RJD, but the latest trends show Jan Suraj’s candidate in the lead.
Counting began at 8 AM under strict security measures, starting with postal ballots. The counting of votes from electronic voting machines (EVMs) commenced at 8:30 AM. A total of 16 tables have been set up for the counting process, with three personnel assigned to each table. The counting of EVM votes is expected to be completed over 31 rounds.
In this by-election, the BJP has fielded Neeraj Kumar Sinha. Alongside Kishor and RJD’s Rekha Gupta, a total of 25 candidates are contesting.
The Bankipur Assembly seat became vacant following the resignation of BJP National President Nitin Nabin. Having been held by the BJP since 1995, the results of this by-election are under close scrutiny, as any shift in trends could signify a significant change in Bihar’s political landscape.
