Political Turmoil Escalates in Punjab Assembly as Opposition Targets Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann

Chandigarh, May 1: The political climate in Punjab is heating up once again. A fierce exchange of accusations is underway between leaders of the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party regarding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has raised questions about the Chief Minister’s governance and the decisions made by the government. In response, state minister Barinder Kumar Goyal has accused the opposition of attempting to disrupt the atmosphere.

Warring commented on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating, “The government has its own rules and regulations that must be followed. If these rules are not adhered to, questions will naturally arise. If the opposition raises an issue and the government dismisses it, it is the Chief Minister’s responsibility to clarify the situation with facts and prove his point.”

On the issue of drug abuse, the Congress state president criticized the government, saying, “The drug problem in Punjab is well-known, and the entire world is aware of this situation. Merely announcing campaigns will not suffice; the government must take concrete steps.”

He also emphasized the need to maintain the dignity of the assembly, asserting that the sanctity of democratic institutions must never be compromised under any circumstances.

Regarding the confidence motion, Warring alleged, “The government is under pressure, and bringing the confidence motion forward only to withdraw it may be part of a calculated strategy. This entire episode raises questions about the government’s intentions and indicates political instability.”

In response to the demand for a drug test for all members of the assembly made by Leader of the Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa, state minister Barinder Kumar Goyal reacted sharply. He stated, “Decisions cannot be made based on one leader’s suggestion. The assembly operates under the Speaker’s guidance and established rules.”

Goyal sarcastically remarked that if everyone began making demands, it would be challenging to conduct assembly proceedings.

He also addressed the assembly session, noting that it has been proceeding smoothly so far, and the Chief Minister has acknowledged this. He accused, “Some individuals are deliberately trying to disrupt the atmosphere, while the government aims for the assembly’s proceedings to progress positively and constructively.”

On the other hand, Pratap Singh Bajwa leveled serious allegations against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He stated, “It is extremely unfortunate that such accusations were made in the assembly in the presence of the Chief Minister. For the first time since independence, a Chief Minister has made such allegations against an elected leader in the assembly and then refused to acknowledge them.”

Bajwa also questioned the Speaker’s role, stating, “It is the Speaker’s duty to uphold the traditions, values, and dignity of the assembly. If the Speaker fails to fulfill this responsibility, it will be a concerning situation for our democratic system.”
