Islamabad, May 3: A police constable was shot dead in the Kachi Kamar area of Lucky Marwat district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on Sunday, according to local media reports.
Kudratullah Khan, spokesperson for the district police officer (DPO) of Lucky Marwat, stated that armed assailants targeted Constable Irfanullah near his home. Reports from ‘Dawn’ indicate that the constable sustained gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a hospital in Serai Naurang.
The police officer revealed that the constable was stationed in Peshawar and had returned to his village on leave. Following the incident, a police team arrived at the scene and initiated a search for the attackers.
This incident occurs amid a rising trend of attacks on police and security forces in Pakistan, particularly in border provinces like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On Friday, a similar attack took place, where a police vehicle in the Kanger Jan Bahadur area of Bannu was targeted with a rocket. This assault resulted in the death of one constable and left two others injured.
According to Yasir Afridi, the district police officer of Bannu, the vehicle was en route from the Fateh Khel checkpoint to the police lines when it came under attack. Following the assault, gunfire and explosions ensued, leading to the closure of Miryan Road for traffic. Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.
On April 27, a head constable was also killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the Hurmazi area of Pishin district in Balochistan. Police reported that the attackers opened fire on the checkpoint using automatic weapons. Although police returned fire, the head constable lost his life during the exchange, and the assailants fled the scene.
