New Delhi, February 19: Excitement is palpable across the nation as Ramadan approaches. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt greetings to the citizens for the holy month of Ramadan.

His message came just a day before the first fast, reinforcing the spirit of harmony and brotherhood in the country. In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, he stated, “Ramadan Mubarak. This sacred month should enhance the feeling of unity in our society. May peace and prosperity prevail everywhere.”

In a similar vein, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also conveyed his Ramadan wishes. He shared on ‘X’, “Ramadan Mubarak. This holy month wishes peace, prosperity, and good health for everyone.”

Earlier, the Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari from Delhi’s historic Jama Masjid announced that the holy month of Ramadan will commence on Thursday, following confirmation of the moon sighting. Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, perform prayers, and recite the Quran. This month is regarded as a time of mercy (rahmat), forgiveness (magfirat), and salvation (najat).

During Ramadan, the Muslim community particularly observes the traditions of Iftar and Suhoor. People give to the poor, perform Taraweeh prayers, and complete the recitation of the Quran. Emphasis is placed on charity and social harmony throughout this month.

After the announcement of Ramadan, a local resident in Delhi shared with a news agency, “Mashallah, this is the month of Ramadan, a time of goodness and blessings. The first part of this blessed month is mercy, the second is forgiveness, and the third is the path to salvation.”

Another resident remarked, “This is a very blessed month for worship. In it, both the rich and the poor come together. Allah grants blessings during this time. We all eat and drink together, and we engage in worship.”
