New Delhi, March 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a webinar on “Agriculture and Rural Transformation” following the budget announcement. He stressed the importance of infusing new energy into the agriculture sector. This year’s budget has introduced new initiatives aimed at this goal, and he expressed confidence that the discussions and insights from the webinar would facilitate the swift implementation of budget provisions.
In his address, PM Modi noted the opening of global markets and the changing demands worldwide. He emphasized the need for more discussions on making agriculture export-oriented. With India’s diverse climate, he urged farmers to leverage the agro-climatic zones effectively.
The Prime Minister highlighted the focus on high-value agriculture in the budget. Special emphasis was placed on coconuts to benefit farmers in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, there are proposals to promote crops from the North East.
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and officials from relevant departments participated in the webinar. PM Modi stated, “It is essential that the country reaps the full potential of the budget. Your experiences and suggestions are crucial for ensuring that the budget benefits the maximum number of people. The funds allocated must be utilized effectively and promptly.”
He reiterated that agriculture is the backbone of the economy and a strategic pillar for India’s long-term development. The government has consistently strengthened the agriculture sector. Through the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, over 10 crore farmers have received more than ₹4 lakh crore.
PM Modi further mentioned, “Reforms in MSP have resulted in farmers receiving returns up to one and a half times their investment. Institutional credit coverage has surpassed 75%. Under the PM Crop Insurance Scheme, claims worth approximately ₹2 lakh crore have been settled. These efforts have significantly reduced farmers’ risks and provided them with essential economic security.”
