PM Modi Celebrates Indian Hockey Teams Historic Gold at Asian Games 2026

New Delhi, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian men’s hockey team on Saturday for securing the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026. The team triumphed over Malaysia with a decisive 5-1 victory in the final held at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara. Modi described this journey as extraordinary for Indian hockey.

This victory marks a historic moment as India retains its continental title for the first time and secures direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The Prime Minister’s Office shared a message on X, stating, “Congratulations to our men’s hockey team for retaining the Asian Games gold with a fantastic win in the final. This is the first time that both our men’s and women’s teams have won gold in the same Asian Games, showcasing India’s dominance in hockey on the Asian stage.”

Modi also congratulated wrestlers Aman Sagar and Deepak Punia for their medal achievements on this remarkable day for Indian sports. Aman, who won gold in the men’s 57 kg freestyle category, was commended by the Prime Minister for making history by clinching India’s first gold medal in this event at the Asian Games. His impressive journey from a bronze medal in the last games to the top of the podium this year has been remarkable.

Deepak Punia, who secured a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 97 kg category, was also recognized. The PMO noted, “After six decades, India has returned to the podium in the men’s 97 kg freestyle wrestling event at the Asian Games. Deepak’s bronze medal adds a new chapter to India’s wrestling journey.”

On the same day, Pranavi Urs made history by becoming the first Indian woman golfer to win gold at the Asian Games. Modi praised her achievement, stating, “A historic accomplishment. Congratulations to Pranavi Sharath Urs for winning India’s first gold medal in women’s individual golf at the Asian Games. Her outstanding performance has given the country a memorable moment in sports. I hope this victory inspires more young Indians to take up the sport and strive for excellence.”

Additionally, 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod made headlines by winning gold in the individual recurve archery event. Modi congratulated her, saying, “A gold medal that will always be remembered. Congratulations to Kumkum Anil Mohod for becoming the first Indian woman to win a recurve individual gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games. Her composure and patience during the decisive shoot-off were truly impressive. May she achieve even greater heights in her future endeavors.”
