PIMS Hospital Udaipur Performs Rare and Successful Angioplasty of Abdominal Artery
Udaipur, April 9 In a significant medical breakthrough, the Cardiology Department at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Udaipur (Umarada) has successfully performed a rare angioplasty of the Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) in a 52-year-old patient. This procedure is considered highly complex and uncommon due to the arteryโs deep abdominal location and critical role in supplying blood to the intestines.
Life-Saving Diagnosis and Intervention
Chairman Ashish Agrawal of PIMS Hospital shared that the patient was admitted after experiencing severe abdominal pain. A CT scan revealed a 99% blockage in the Superior Mesenteric Artery โ a condition that, if left untreated, could lead to intestinal gangrene and life-threatening complications.
The patient was immediately referred to the Cardiology Department, where Senior Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Mahesh Jain, along with his skilled team, conducted a successful angioplasty. A stent was implanted in the blocked artery, effectively restoring blood flow and preventing further complications.
The procedure was conducted with critical support from Cardiac Anesthetist Dr. Vipin Sisodia and Surgeon Dr. Vivek Rawat.
Understanding Superior Mesenteric Artery Blockage
Dr. Mahesh Jain explained, โBlockages in the superior mesenteric artery are rare but extremely dangerous. Common symptoms include intense abdominal pain, especially after meals. If not treated on time, it can lead to gangrene in the intestines and can be fatal.โ
He added that such cases require immediate diagnosis and intervention. In this case, the patient responded well to the procedure and was discharged within four to five days. Currently, the patient is stable and recovering well.
