Pat Cummins Strategy Shines in SRHs Victory Over Punjab Kings

Hyderabad, May 7: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured the top spot in the standings by defeating Punjab Kings by 33 runs in a match held at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday evening. James Franklin, the assistant coach of SRH, credited the victory to captain Pat Cummins’ tactical understanding and the strategy he devised for bowling.

Cummins dismissed Punjab Kings’ most dangerous batsman, Priyansh Arya, in the very first over. Franklin described this as a result of Cummins’ well-thought-out strategy.

In the post-match press conference, Franklin stated, “I believe the plan was in place beforehand. Our bowlers work closely with bowling coach Varun Aaron before the match. Sometimes, you don’t need to bowl exactly what the field expects. We had seen the ball before. He bowled with good bounce on a similar line and created an opportunity. All our bowlers know how to expose Priyansh and create chances. Cummins got us the first wicket with Priyansh.”

He added, “I think we found it easier to plan based on the feedback from our batsmen in the first innings. As the innings progressed, they felt the pitch was slowing down. They found it challenging to hit when Punjab’s bowlers were delivering fast cutters. This feedback was crucial for our bowling group. When you bat first in a game, how you try to implement your bowling strategy largely depends on how the pitch is playing, so we took advantage of the experience from batting first.”

Franklin emphasized that the discussions between Varun, Pat Cummins, and head coach Daniel Vettori regarding the bowling group are extensive, especially since batting has become quite strong these days. The top three or four teams in the IPL, particularly during the powerplay, have formidable batting lineups. The strategy we devised worked well during the powerplay. We created some early chances, dismissed their dangerous openers in the first few overs, and after getting Shreyas out quickly, we gained a solid grip on the game.

He remarked, “Even after Shreyas’ wicket fell, we knew Punjab’s batting had depth. Cooper played excellently to score his first IPL century. I’m sure he will be proud of that. However, our bowling remained consistent throughout the 20 overs as per our plan, which yielded results.”

SRH batted first, scoring 235 runs and restricting Punjab to 202, winning the match by 33 runs. SRH captain Pat Cummins was named Player of the Match for his impressive bowling figures of 2 wickets for 34 runs in 4 overs.
