Pankaj Tripathi’s Play ‘Lailaj’ Selected for 25th India Rang Mahotsav

Mumbai: The India Rang Mahotsav is a prestigious event in the Indian theatre world, regarded as a significant platform for drama artists and enthusiasts alike. Every year, selected plays from across India and abroad are showcased, making it a proud moment for any artist to have their work chosen for this esteemed festival.

Actor Pankaj Tripathi’s play ‘Lailaj’ has been officially selected for the 25th edition of the India Rang Mahotsav, an achievement that fills the actor with immense happiness. Pankaj Tripathi described this recognition as a deeply personal and special moment in his life. He said, “The India Rang Mahotsav is like the soul of Indian theatre, and having my play selected here reconnects me with my roots. Theatre is where I learned the true art of acting, and the National School of Drama (NSD) taught me discipline, honesty, and respect for the craft.”

‘Lailaj’ was produced by Pankaj Tripathi and his wife Mridula under their theatre banner ‘Rupkatha Rangmanch’. The play will be officially staged at the festival organised by the National School of Drama in Delhi.

Speaking about this opportunity, Pankaj Tripathi said, “To have our first production on this new theatre platform presented on such a grand and respected stage feels like a dream come true. Though ‘Lailaj’ tells a simple story, it represents the hard work of many artists and technicians, along with a deep faith in theatre.”

The play is written and directed by Faiz Mohammad Khan and marks Pankaj Tripathi’s return to theatre after nearly ten years. The play is also special as it features his daughter Aashi, who is making her debut on the theatre stage.

He added, “Sharing the stage with my daughter is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. For me, it is not just acting but a heartfelt offering to theatre.”

Mridula, co-producer of the play and Pankaj’s wife, expressed her joy over the success. She said, “When I started Rupkatha Rangmanch, my aim was not to seek big platforms, but to tell stories with honesty and true emotions. ‘Lailaj’ being chosen for the India Rang Mahotsav is deeply satisfying and encouraging.”

Regarding their daughter’s theatre debut, Mridula shared, “As parents, this is an emotional moment for us. I am grateful to the audience, the festival, and all those who continue to believe in the power of theatre. Theatre still holds the power to connect people, touch emotions, and reflect society.”
