Pakistani Jaish Commander Killed in Joint Operation in Kathua

Jammu, 23 January: In a significant counter-terrorism operation, joint forces successfully killed a Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist commander named Usman in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

Bhim Sen Tuti, Inspector General of Police (Jammu Zone), shared the information on the social media platform ‘X’, stating that a team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, along with the Army and CRPF, conducted the operation in Bilawar area of Kathua district, resulting in the elimination of the Pakistani terrorist.

The Rising Star Corps of the Army also confirmed the operation on ‘X’, saying, “Acting on specific intelligence inputs, on 23 January, the Army and Police launched a joint operation in Parhetar area of Kathua. The area was cordoned off and contact was established. The precise action of the joint forces led to the neutralisation of one foreign terrorist. Search operations are ongoing.”

Officials revealed that the Jaish-e-Mohammed commander had crossed the border into India during 2021-2022 and remained active for the past two years. He was previously spotted in the districts of Doda, Udhampur, and Kathua in Jammu division.

Intelligence about the terrorist’s presence was gathered by Bilawar Police, and within a swift 10-minute operation, the commander was killed.

Bilawar and other parts of Kathua district have witnessed intense encounters previously. On 13 January, a firefight broke out after terrorists opened fire on a search party in the Najot/Kahog area of Bilawar. Additionally, on 16 January, security forces uncovered a terrorist hideout in the Kamad Nala forest area.

In June 2025, Bilawar Police arrested several drug peddlers involved in heroin, methamphetamine, and alcohol smuggling in areas including Pallan, Dharmkot, and Katli Mod.

Further, on 12 June, security forces killed two terrorists in the Hiranagar area of Kathua. A terrorist was also killed in an encounter near Kathua on 30 September 2024.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police S.P. Vaid praised the CRPF for the operation, stating, “Despite extremely adverse weather conditions such as snowfall, heavy rainfall, and strong winds in Kathua district’s Bilawar area, a joint operation by the Army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police successfully eliminated a Pakistani Jaish terrorist. Well done!”
