Kanpur, October 19 (Daily Kiran): The festival of Dhanteras brought a massive shopping wave across Kanpur, with estimated sales crossing ₹2,000 crore. From gold, silver, and vehicles to utensils, electronics, clothes, sweets, and Lakshmi-Ganesh idols, people indulged in heavy festive purchases throughout the day and late into the night.

Traders said that a reduction in GST has also encouraged more customers to shop this festive season. The city’s major markets, including Govind Nagar, Kidwai Nagar, Gumti, Naveen Market, Birhana Road, Chowk Sarafa, Lal Bangla, Barra, Naubasta, Kalyanpur, Express Road, and Maniram Baghia, remained packed with buyers.

Local utensil markets like Hatia and Bhunsatoli also saw brisk business, with strong demand for steel, brass, copper, and bronze utensils. Hatia-based shopkeeper Atul Kumar Gupta said customers preferred both traditional and modern designs this year.

Jewellery markets, particularly Chowk Sarafa and Birhana Road, witnessed massive crowds with showrooms struggling to manage customers amid high demand for gold and silver ornaments. Similarly, two-wheeler and four-wheeler showrooms reported record sales. Customer Ramji Sharma, who purchased a scooter, said he chose Dhanteras for his new vehicle in keeping with Hindu tradition.

Electronics stores also saw strong footfall, with popular markets like Birhana Road, Govind Nagar, Lal Bangla, Kidwai Nagar, Swaroop Nagar, and Kalyanpur bustling with buyers of TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines.

Traditional items like laiya, khile, and gatta, along with idols, readymade garments, and food stalls, added to the festive spirit in the markets.

To ensure safety and smooth movement, police were deployed across the city, with special teams and mounted units monitoring crowded areas. Traffic diversions were also implemented in key zones to manage the heavy rush.
