Kolkata, May 29: Renowned Bengali filmmaker and National Award winner Anik Dutta’s passing has sparked a wave of grief and outrage. Minister Agnimitra Paul expressed her sorrow, stating it is hard to accept that he is no longer with us.
Anik Dutta’s mortal remains were brought to Nandan on Friday, where members of the Bengali film industry, politicians, and fans gathered to bid him farewell.
In an interview, Minister Agnimitra Paul praised Dutta as an exceptionally talented director. She noted that his films were not only blockbusters but also exemplified remarkable talent and quality. “Today, we have lost such a director. He was not just a filmmaker but also a family friend. It is incredibly difficult for us to accept that Anik Da is no longer among us,” she said.
Paul accused the previous government of creating obstacles for Dutta’s work, lamenting that his films were not allowed to be screened due to political vendettas. She pointed out that Sayani Ghosh, who worked with Dutta and is now a member of TMC, was notably absent from his funeral. “It is very sad. If we had shown respect at the funeral, it wouldn’t matter which party we belonged to,” she added.
Criticizing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Agnimitra Paul remarked that her mentality is “very low and deplorable.” While she preferred not to delve into politics as a minister, she felt compelled to voice her concerns. “The hypocrisy of the TMC party, Mamata Banerjee, and Abhishek Banerjee has now been exposed,” she stated.
BJP leader Locket Chatterjee also weighed in, calling Dutta’s death a significant loss for the Bengali film industry. “He was a nationally recognized filmmaker and a wonderful human being. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time. We sincerely hope to avoid any more tragic and untimely deaths,” she said.
Anik Dutta tragically passed away after falling from the roof of his home in the Hindustan Park area of Kolkata on Wednesday.
