Opposition Criticizes ED Raids on Punjab Ministers Residence

New Delhi, May 10: The opposition has targeted the central government following the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid at the residence of Punjab Minister Sanjeev Arora on Saturday. They allege that the motive behind the raid is to pressure Arora into joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a scenario they believe is unlikely to happen.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha spoke to a news agency, stating, “This is what we call opportunism. If you look at the background, Sanjeev Arora was previously in the Rajya Sabha. He was a minister there. It is unclear, but perhaps the ED raid is based on the assumption that he is ready to join the largest party in the world.”

Commenting on the swearing-in ceremony of Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister Vijay, Jha remarked, “I also watched the swearing-in ceremony. From today, his real test begins. He faces challenges, and the people of Tamil Nadu are eagerly waiting to see how effectively he can turn those challenges into opportunities.”

In response to the ED’s actions at the residences of Punjab ministers, Congress MP Manish Tiwari stated, “Since the BJP government came to power in 2014, there has been a consistent misuse of government agencies and intelligence mechanisms. Such misuse is unacceptable. Once in power, it should not be abused.”

Tiwari further emphasized, “From 2014 to 2026, the continuous misuse of the CBI, ED, and Income Tax Department against political opponents has been evident. The opposition needs to unite to form a consensus on this issue. Our democracy is being completely crushed.”

He added, “The fundamental issue is that when I initiated the debate on electoral reforms in the Lok Sabha in December 2025, I stated, and I still believe, that neither the Constitution nor any law (including the Representation of the People Act, 1950) permits the Election Commission to conduct SIRs across the entire state or country.”
