Odisha Declares Two More Districts Naxal-Free After Surrender of 15 Maoists

Bhubaneswar, March 2: Following the surrender of 15 Maoists in the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh, Odisha’s Director General of Police, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, officially declared Balangir and Bargarh as Naxal-free districts on Sunday.

According to state police, this development marks a significant achievement in ongoing anti-Naxal operations. The surrender took place during a special event in Mahasamund district, which shares a border with Odisha’s Bargarh district.

Police sources revealed that the surrendered cadre were active in the Balangir-Bargarh-Mahasamund division. With the surrender of these 15 insurgents, both Bargarh and Balangir districts have been declared free from Naxalite activities.

DGP Khurania stated that the complete eradication of Naxal activities in these districts was made possible due to prolonged joint operations, precise intelligence, coordinated efforts of central and state security forces, and the active cooperation of local residents.

He expressed that this achievement was a result of the police force’s courage, restraint, and commitment. On this occasion, he congratulated all officers and personnel involved in the operations and thanked the public for their trust and continued support.

Khurania further mentioned that similar intensive campaigns will continue in other affected areas of the state to ensure the complete elimination of the Naxal problem.

Previously, Odisha police had declared Malkangiri, Koraput, Boudh, Nuapada, and Nabarangpur as free from Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).

Meanwhile, as the deadline for the complete eradication of Left-Wing Extremism approaches, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chara Manjhi stated on February 23 that approximately 40 Maoists are currently active in various parts of the state.
