Bhubaneswar, May 8: The Odisha Vigilance Department arrested a couple on Thursday for their alleged involvement in a fraud case involving the embezzlement of over ₹1.08 crore from government funds.
The accused have been identified as Nivedita Tarai and her live-in partner, Nar Singh Prasad Khamari. Sources from the Vigilance Department revealed that Khamari has been in a long-term relationship with Tarai.
It is noteworthy that the anti-corruption department had previously arrested Sudhanshu Khora, the branch manager of the Koraput Central Cooperative (KCC) Bank in Malkangiri, on May 5 in connection with this case. He is currently in police custody for further investigation.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Vigilance Department indicated that Khora had connected with Tarai through Facebook. Subsequently, the trio allegedly devised a plan to misappropriate bank funds.
The investigation has revealed that Khora transferred approximately ₹63 lakh, which was embezzled, to his accomplices, Nivedita Tarai and Nar Singh Prasad Khamari, as part of a scheme to evade capture.
Further inquiries into Khamari and Tarai have uncovered that both are professional criminals who may have defrauded numerous individuals and executed several scams.
The Vigilance Department’s press release mentioned that a case involving ₹14 lakh in fraud committed by Khamari has been registered at the Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office. Additionally, there are suspicions of ₹30 lakh in fraud in Jagatsinghpur, along with potential scams in Baripada, Paradip, and Bhubaneswar.
The department also noted that their finance and banking experts are currently investigating 25 bank accounts linked to the couple across various banks.
