NTPC Group Achieves Major Milestone with 90 GW Power Generation Capacity, Aims for 149 GW by 2032

New Delhi, May 18: The state-owned power company NTPC Limited has surpassed a significant milestone by achieving 90 gigawatts (GW) of installed power generation capacity. This accomplishment follows the successful trial operation of Unit-2 (800 megawatts) at the Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) in Jharkhand. An official statement released on Monday confirmed this achievement.

According to the statement, this project is a 3×800 megawatt capacity subsidiary project. It emphasized that this milestone is a crucial step towards creating a sustainable and energy-secure future for India.

Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited was established on October 15, 2015. It is a joint venture between NTPC Limited and the Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited, with NTPC holding a 74% stake and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam holding 26%.

PVUNL is committed to providing affordable and reliable electricity in an environmentally friendly manner by adopting new technologies and optimizing resource use.

With this new capacity addition, the NTPC Group now operates over 90 GW of installed power generation capacity across the country. The company also has projects under construction with a capacity of approximately 32 GW.

NTPC aims to achieve a total installed capacity of 149 GW by 2032, which includes plans to source 60 GW from renewable energy.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote renewable energy, NTPC added 5,488 megawatts of renewable capacity through solar, wind, and pumped storage projects in the fiscal year 2025-26.

The company states that this progress reflects its rapid advancement towards a ‘Developed India.’

NTPC’s diverse energy portfolio includes thermal, hydro, solar, and wind energy projects, ensuring affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity supply across the nation.

In addition to power generation, the company has also expanded into new areas such as e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear energy, and green hydrogen.

NTPC reported an over 8% increase in its consolidated net profit for the October-December quarter of the fiscal year 2025-26, with profits rising to ₹5,489 crore, compared to ₹5,063 crore during the same period last year.

Furthermore, the power company announced a second interim dividend of ₹2.75 per share with a face value of ₹10.
