Melbourne, 25 January: Czech tennis star Jakub Mensik has withdrawn from the Australian Open due to a stomach muscle injury. This development has granted 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic a walkover into the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Djokovic is aiming for a record 25th major title. He will face the winner of the fourth-round match between Lorenzo Musetti and Taylor Fritz on Monday.
Mensik shared the news on Instagram, stating, “It is difficult to write this. Despite all efforts, I have to withdraw from the Australian Open due to an injury to my stomach muscles. The injury worsened during previous matches. After lengthy discussions with my team and doctors, we have decided I will not take the court tomorrow.”
The ATP live ranking’s 16th-ranked Mensik added, “Although I am disappointed, reaching the fourth round here for the first time is something I will remember for a long time. I received great energy from the fans, and the atmosphere in Melbourne was truly special. Thanks to my team for supporting me at every step. I also thank everyone who sent messages and encouragement. Now it is time to recover properly.”
Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open a record 10 times, is the number one male player in this regard. With Mensik’s withdrawal, Djokovic has advanced to his 16th Australian Open quarterfinal.
This anticipated fourth-round match was a rematch of the 2025 Miami Open final, where Mensik had claimed his first Masters 1000 title by defeating Djokovic.
The 38-year-old Serbian player has not lost a single set at Melbourne Park in 2026. With his recent victory over Botic van de Zandschulp, Djokovic has recorded his 102nd match win at the tournament. He has also equaled Roger Federer’s record for the most men’s match wins at the Australian Open.
