Gopalganj, May 30: A notorious criminal was injured in a police encounter early Saturday in Gopalganj, Bihar. The criminal, who had a bounty of ₹50,000 on his head, was shot in both legs during the confrontation. He was subsequently admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
According to reports, Gopalganj police and the Special Task Force (STF) apprehended Akash Kumar late Friday night. Following his arrest, he reportedly disclosed the location of hidden weapons. The police took him to the Banjari bypass area to recover the arms. During this process, Akash opened fire on the officers, prompting them to return fire in self-defense, resulting in his injuries.
Akash Kumar is the son of Manoj Singh, a resident of the Thave police station area. He has been implicated in approximately 12 criminal cases, including the murder of former Thave head Kuraish Miyan, robbery, and extortion. Recently, he had threatened a local steel businessman, Mrityunjay Kumar, demanding extortion money and issued a 60-day ultimatum for compliance. Consequently, the police had placed a bounty on his head.
The Bihar STF had been pursuing this notorious criminal for five years, but he had managed to evade capture each time. Akash is currently receiving treatment at the Gopalganj district hospital, where a firearm was also recovered from the scene.
It is noteworthy that since the appointment of Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, law enforcement has been granted greater authority to take action against criminals.
