New Delhi: Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the singles event of the Australian Open and will participate only in the doubles category. Kyrgios is expected to team up with Thanasi Kokkinakis for the doubles matches.
On Friday, Kyrgios shared on his Instagram, “I have decided to focus solely on the Australian Open doubles this year. I am fit and back on the court, but a five-set singles match is a different challenge, and I am not fully ready yet. This tournament means everything to me, but I want to give my spot to someone ready to make their moment memorable. I will return next year and look forward to competing. See you then.”
Limited Matches and Recent Form
Kyrgios played only five matches in 2025 and has competed in just six professional singles matches over the past three years. Last month, he made a smooth comeback through a series of exhibition matches in New York and Dubai. He received a wildcard for the Brisbane International but lost in the first round on Tuesday to Alexander Kovacevic with scores of 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, Kyrgios and his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis were defeated in the second round on Wednesday in Brisbane by the French pair Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.
Injuries and Ranking Impact
Kyrgios has suffered several serious injuries recently, which have affected his career and dropped his ranking to 673. The former Wimbledon finalist has played only one Grand Slam match since 2022. Notably, he won the Australian Open men’s doubles title in 2022 alongside Kokkinakis, defeating Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in straight sets.
After losing to Novak Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final, the 30-year-old Kyrgios underwent two surgeries on his wrist and knee. Fans are hopeful for a strong comeback from him in the Australian Open doubles event this year.
