
Chennai, February 8: New Zealand kicked off their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing victory over Afghanistan, winning by five wickets. Chasing a target of 183 runs, New Zealand reached their goal in just 17.5 overs, thanks to a stellar half-century from opener Tim Seifert.
In the match held at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Afghanistan set a challenging target after winning the toss and opting to bat first. They managed to score 182 runs, losing six wickets. Gulbadin Naib was the standout performer for Afghanistan, scoring 63 runs off 35 balls, including four sixes and three fours.
New Zealand faced early trouble when Mujib Ur Rahman struck twice in the second over, dismissing Finn Allen and Rachin Ravindra, leaving the team at 14 runs for two wickets. However, Seifert, alongside all-rounder Glenn Phillips, steadied the innings with a 74-run partnership for the third wicket. Phillips contributed 42 runs off 25 balls before being dismissed.
Seifert continued to anchor the innings, scoring 65 runs off 42 balls, featuring three sixes and seven fours. He was eventually out after adding 36 runs with Mark Chapman, who scored 28 runs off 17 balls.
Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner also chipped in with quick runs, helping New Zealand secure the win with a total of 183 runs for the loss of five wickets.
For Afghanistan, Mujib Ur Rahman was the only bowler to make a significant impact, taking two wickets for 31 runs in four overs. Other bowlers struggled, with Omarzai, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Nabi each claiming one wicket but conceding runs at a high rate.
New Zealand’s bowlers, including Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, and Ravindra, each contributed to the team’s bowling effort, with Ferguson taking two wickets.
Tim Seifert was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
