New Secretary Appointed for Bengal Governor Following Power Shift

Kolkata, May 5: Following the announcement of the West Bengal assembly election results, a significant bureaucratic change has occurred. Governor R.N. Ravi has appointed a new secretary.

Officials reported on Tuesday that Soumitra Mohan, a 2002 batch IAS officer and the former transport secretary, has been designated as the governor’s secretary. He has served as the transport secretary for over three years. Despite several administrative changes during the election period, he remained in his position.

Immediately after the vote counting concluded on Monday, Mohan was appointed as the governor’s secretary. Ravi took the oath of office as West Bengal’s new governor on March 12 at the Lok Bhawan in Kolkata. It is understood that he requested the appointment of a secretary within a week of assuming office. However, this process was delayed due to the issuance of the election notification shortly after he took charge.

Previously, when C.V. Anand Bose was the governor, IAS officer Nandini Chakraborty served as his secretary. However, she was removed from the position shortly after her appointment. Sources indicate that she was labeled as a “person of the ruling party” upon her arrival at Lok Bhawan, which contributed to her removal. Despite this, Nandini later served as the state’s home secretary and eventually as the chief secretary.

In February 2023, the then-governor Anand Bose removed Nandini from her position as principal secretary. Since then, no IAS officer has been appointed to this role. Now, after nearly three years, a bureaucrat has once again been appointed as the governor’s secretary.

Earlier in the day, Governor R.N. Ravi, accompanied by his wife Lakshmi Ravi, offered prayers at the Kalighat Kali Temple. He prayed for the welfare of the people and for the progress and prosperity of West Bengal.

On Monday, a significant political shift occurred in the state when the BJP came to power, displacing the Trinamool Congress government.
