New Delhi, June 16: The Ministry of Health has announced that a doctor’s prescription will now be mandatory for all syrups, including cough syrups. Chemists in East Delhi have welcomed this decision, stating it will significantly curb the misuse of medications by youth. However, concerns remain regarding the consultation costs for low-income patients.
Chemists in Laxmi Nagar expressed their support for the government’s decision during discussions. Chemist Amritnath Shukla emphasized the importance of adhering to government guidelines. He urged the government to consider the needs of all social classes. “If a poor person comes asking for cough medicine, what should be done? They often cannot afford the 500 rupees for a doctor’s fee. If they manage to pay that, where will they find another 500 for the medicine?” he questioned, suggesting the government needs to address this issue.
Shukla noted that around 80% of their customers do not have a doctor’s prescription. “If a poor person can find relief from a 100-rupee medicine, why would they pay 500 rupees to see a doctor?” He added that while they do not dispense banned medications, they should be allowed to provide some mild medicines without a prescription.
Chemist Vishnu Guha remarked that while the government has issued this notification, prescriptions have always been required for cough syrups. He highlighted the importance of knowing which syrup is suitable for each patient, as some medications can cause adverse reactions. “If someone is unable to pay for a doctor’s fee, they should be seen at a dispensary,” he suggested. Guha also pointed out that cough syrups are often misused for recreational purposes. “Having a prescription is beneficial for both us and the patients. We welcome this decision by the government.”
