Dehradun, August 27: Padam Thapa, the president of the Gorkhali Reform Assembly, expressed deep sorrow on Thursday for the lives lost in the severe floods in Nepal. He assured that the organization is ready to send financial and relief assistance, including medicines, to those affected in the Himalayan nation.
Speaking to reporters, Thapa noted that people, even those without direct ties to Nepal, are profoundly saddened by this tragedy in the neighboring country. He emphasized the natural concern among families who have daughters married in Nepal or those who have brought brides from there.
Thapa mentioned that the Gorkhali Reform Assembly has 46 branches in Uttarakhand. He stated that they are in constant contact with the heads of each branch. He recently received a call from Maya Khadka, the head of the Rishikesh branch, who informed him that most affected individuals are in the Rasuwal area near the Nepal-Tibet border. As observed, villages around the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers have been severely impacted.
He explained that many Gorkha families travel to Nepal for pilgrimage, and their relatives may also be there. Thapa urged them to remain prepared during this disaster. After meetings with the executive committee of their organization and other branches, they aim to provide financial aid, relief materials, and medicines as much as possible.
Thapa also noted that members of the Gorkha community from India participate in the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage. Conversations with locals indicate that this is a disaster, with bodies being recovered one after another.
The Gorkhali Reform Assembly leader appealed to the governments of Uttarakhand and Delhi to issue guidelines for Nepali students who have come to India for higher education. This is to ensure they do not panic and plan to return home immediately. He urged the government to facilitate arrangements for students and families wishing to visit their relatives in the Himalayan country at a later date.
