NDA Government in Assam Set to Take Oath on May 12 for Third Consecutive Term

Guwahati, May 7: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is poised to take oath on May 12 in Assam. This follows a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections, paving the way for a third consecutive term in power.

Sources indicate that the NDA legislative party will convene on May 10 at 10 AM in Guwahati. During this meeting, the alliance’s legislators will formally elect their leader. All victorious NDA candidates have been instructed to arrive in Guwahati by May 9 in preparation for this event.

Senior BJP leader and former national president J.P. Nadda, along with Haryana Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, is also expected to arrive in Assam on May 9 to participate in the meeting and government formation process.

Following the legislative party meeting, the NDA is likely to present its claim to form the government before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on the evening of May 10.

The BJP-led alliance has secured a clear majority in the recently concluded Assam assembly elections, setting the stage for the current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to return to power.

Previously, Chief Minister Sarma stated that the new government would be formed and take the oath after completing constitutional and organizational processes post-May 11.

After submitting his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Sarma informed the media that the Election Commission had officially announced the election results. Following this, he resigned from his position along with his council of ministers as per democratic tradition.

He remarked, “The Election Commission has formally declared the results and submitted the notification to the Governor. Immediately after, I resigned from the Chief Minister’s position and recommended the dissolution of the current Assam Assembly.”

Sarma confirmed that the Governor accepted both of his recommendations and instructed the existing government to continue functioning in a caretaker capacity until the new government is formed.

He added, “We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities as a caretaker government until the new administration is established.”
