Mumbai, May 10: Vijay Rahatkar, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited the One-Stop Center at KEM Hospital in Mumbai on Saturday. This center provides support for women affected by violence. An official confirmed the visit.
During her tour, Rahatkar interacted with staff and offered suggestions to enhance the center’s services.
In a message on social media, the NCW Chairperson expressed satisfaction after observing the medical room, counseling room, temporary shelter facility, and the overall positive environment of the center located in Parel, Mumbai.
After inspecting the medical examination room and other facilities, Rahatkar noted that she provided relevant recommendations to the concerned authorities to address some necessary shortcomings in the center’s operations.
The One-Stop Center (OSC) aims to assist women facing violence in private and public spaces, including family, community, and workplaces. It offers support and remedial services to women experiencing physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse, regardless of their age, class, caste, education, marital status, race, or culture.
Rahatkar’s visit to the OSC at KEM Hospital followed her recent recommendation to the central government for a complete ban on parole for individuals convicted of rape, serious sexual assault, and other severe crimes against women and children.
An official statement released on Friday indicated that the proposed recommendations by the commission may include amendments to prison and parole regulations. These amendments would classify rape, serious sexual offenses, repeat sexual crimes, and serious offenses under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act as ineligible categories for parole or temporary release from jail.
