
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has secured a 10-year jail sentence for a truck driver and his cleaner in a special NDPS court in Gaya. The two were convicted for transporting 1,419 kilograms of poppy husk and 4.7 kilograms of opium. An official provided this information on Sunday.
According to the official statement, the main carrier and receiver, Shravan Kumar and Suraj Sharma, both residents of Kurukshetra, Haryana, were arrested on August 11, 2021, with the prohibited substances.
The district and sessions judge-cum-special judge (NDPS), third court, Gaya, pronounced the sentence on Saturday.
Both convicts were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and fined Rs 2 lakh each. The court ordered that if they fail to pay the fine, they will have to serve an additional two years in jail.
The NCB Patna zonal unit secured the conviction under Sections 15(c) and 18(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The statement added that the truck, bearing registration number HR67A-2538, was stopped near the Amas Toll Plaza in Gaya and seized at the Amas police station.
This sentence serves as a warning to those involved in illegal drug trade and reflects NCB’s unwavering commitment to tackling narcotics-related crimes.
In another case, the NCB seized equipment used to manufacture mephedrone (MD) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The lab equipment was intended to produce around 200 kilograms of MD for distribution in the illegal drug market.
The official said this operation, conducted on January 29 under ‘Operation Prayogshala’ in collaboration with Jodhpur Rural Police, revealed that three main accused are still at large.
During the raid, NCB officials confiscated various laboratory and industrial equipment, including borosilicate jars, borosilicate glass tubes, an electric induction motor, an industrial electromagnetic stirrer, and other items used in synthetic drug production.
Earlier, on January 25, NCB Jodhpur seized 1.089 kilograms of mephedrone. Based on specific intelligence, the NCB team stopped two individuals on a motorcycle carrying a black bag containing prohibited substances, leading to the arrest of two more accused.
