New Delhi, August 7: On National Handloom Day, a celebration of India’s rich handloom tradition, the renowned Mangalagiri handloom products from Andhra Pradesh received recognition at the highest political office in the country. Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Chintakayala presented a handwoven traditional shawl to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting was attended by BJP National President Nitin Naveen and other senior leaders.
This gesture aligned with Prime Minister Modi’s message for National Handloom Day, where he paid tribute to India’s weavers and artisans. He reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering rural communities, promoting women-led development, and strengthening the handloom sector in line with the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat.’
By gifting the Mangalagiri handloom shawl, Vijay Chintakayala transformed this national celebration into an opportunity to showcase one of Andhra Pradesh’s most famous traditional weaving arts before the country’s leadership.
Mangalagiri handlooms are renowned for their unique craftsmanship and Geographical Indication (GI) status. They reflect the artistry of skilled artisans who have preserved one of India’s oldest weaving traditions.
This initiative also highlights the Andhra Pradesh government’s ongoing focus on promoting local handlooms under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership. Through initiatives aimed at ensuring economic security for artisans, improving market access, and enhancing their recognition, the government strives to strengthen the handloom sector while preserving its cultural heritage.
After the meeting, Vijay Chintakayala remarked that presenting the Mangalagiri handloom shawl to Prime Minister Modi on National Handloom Day was a tribute to all weavers whose craftsmanship keeps our heritage alive. This honor belongs to the artisan community of Andhra Pradesh.
This effort also reflects the continuous endeavors of Information Technology Minister and Mangalagiri MLA Nara Lokesh, who is promoting Mangalagiri handlooms. He has initiated the ‘Nethannaku Seva’ scheme, providing annual financial assistance of ₹25,000 to handloom-weaving families. Additionally, he has established a special school for weavers and is actively working to preserve and promote the region’s rich weaving heritage.
