Mumbai, April 29: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is set to release the results of the sixth phase of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6) shortly.
The NFHS is one of the largest and most comprehensive sample surveys conducted in the country. The sixth phase included 679,238 families from various states and union territories. Conducted during 2023-24, this survey aims to gather high-quality data on health and related indicators. This information will assist policymakers and program managers in setting standards for India’s health sector and assessing progress over time.
For data collection, NFHS-6 utilized a fully digital approach, employing Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) software. This method includes provisions for real-time error detection, verification, and in-depth data review. The data collection process involved rigorous regional supervision and monitoring. To ensure the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of estimates, multi-tiered checks, extensive verification, and reviews were conducted during data processing. The fifth phase of the NFHS was conducted between 2019 and 2021.
The National Family Health Survey is a comprehensive, multi-stage household survey aimed at collecting detailed information on population, health, and nutrition across India. It is operated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai serving as the nodal agency.
The primary objective of the NFHS is to provide high-quality, nationally representative data on key indicators such as fertility rates, mortality rates, family planning, maternal and child health, vaccination, nutrition, anemia, non-communicable diseases, HIV-related behaviors, and women’s empowerment. These statistics serve as a crucial evidence base for policymaking, program evaluation, and monitoring national and global health and development goals at the state and district levels.
