This galaxy is home to over a trillion stars and appears in a striking purple hue. The image, captured by NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, incorporates data from various telescopes. The galaxy’s purple and pink colors result from the X-ray data represented in these shades. By combining visible light and infrared wavelengths into different colors, scientists have created this composite image, which aids in understanding the activities occurring within the galaxy.
Posting the images on Instagram, NASA explained that such composite pictures significantly assist scientists in understanding the processes of star birth, energy, and evolution within galaxies. The Pinwheel Galaxy is also known for its regions of active star formation. This stunning image offers a glimpse into the vast, colorful, and mysterious universe.
The Pinwheel Galaxy is a spiral-shaped galaxy located approximately 21 to 25 million light-years from Earth. It spans 170,000 light-years in width, nearly twice that of the Milky Way Galaxy. Its spiral arms contain massive clouds of gas and dust, where new stars are being formed. Hot, blue stars make these arms even more luminous.
This galaxy is situated near the Ursa Major constellation, commonly known as the ‘Big Dipper,’ in the northern hemisphere. Under clear, dark skies, it can be observed with small telescopes or binoculars. The Pinwheel Galaxy was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Méchain, an associate of Charles Messier. Its apparent magnitude is 7.9, meaning it appears faintly in the night sky.
