Mumbai, 1 January: The city welcomed the New Year with rainfall as several parts of the economic capital experienced showers on Thursday morning.

Instead of bright sunshine, some areas of Mumbai saw rain beginning slightly before 6 am. While some localities received light rain, others experienced drizzle. The intensity of rain gradually decreased after 6:15 am.

Residents of Colaba, Byculla, and Lower Parel described monsoon-like conditions, as rain reduced visibility on main roads such as Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway. By the morning, the rain slowed down and turned into light drizzle.

In contrast, suburban areas from Bandra to Dahisar and Kurla to Mulund saw only light and intermittent rainfall, with continuous drizzling. Cloud cover persisted over these regions, but rainfall remained low. Cool winds caused the minimum temperature to drop to 16 degrees Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light clouds will remain over Mumbai and its suburbs throughout the day, with chances of light rain continuing.

The IMD’s latest forecast, released at 8 am, indicates light rain is likely over the next 48 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 29 degrees Celsius and 16 degrees Celsius respectively.

The rainfall is also expected to provide some relief from air pollution. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 122, which falls under the ‘moderate’ category.

Early risers across the city were greeted by the light rain on New Year’s morning, with many residents sharing updates about the rain on social media as the day progressed.

Meanwhile, the IMD stated that minimum temperatures in Maharashtra will remain steady over the next two days, with a gradual rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius expected over the following four days.
