Mumbai, May 6: BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya, along with Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, held a meeting regarding the birth certificate scam. Following the meeting, the Mayor informed the media that three BMC officials have been suspended, and three others have been transferred. An FIR has also been ordered against the involved parties.
Mayor Ritu Tawde stated that the meeting, attended by former MP Kirit Somaiya and Health Committee Chairman Arish Bhadirge, revealed that at least 87,347 birth certificates were issued illegally. These fraudulent certificates were found to have originated from at least 26 wards of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Recent information has brought this issue to light.
The Mayor emphasized that these 87,347 birth certificates were unlawfully issued under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough investigation into these cases. Orders have been given to remove these certificates from the portal, and action has been initiated against the responsible individuals.
She noted that cases of illegal birth certificates were identified in R North and K West wards, leading to the suspension of relevant medical officers. Vaishali Khade from K West, Sunita Pawar from R North, and Nitish Thakur from E Ward have been suspended from their positions. Additionally, new medical officers have been appointed in E, L, and R wards.
This entire issue primarily emerged through the actions of medical officers within the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The meeting directed strict action to be taken. This is not a new issue; it is part of irregularities that have persisted for nearly 25 years, which are now being exposed. Many individuals involved are now aged between 30 and 40.
The Mayor questioned what officials in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation have been doing over the past 25 years while such a significant scam occurred right under their noses. The campaign to remove illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators has also revealed that 87,347 birth certificates were issued unlawfully. The action to cancel these fake certificates is not a recent development but part of a long-standing issue that is now coming to light. Kirit Somaiya has consistently raised this concern.
So far, several medical officers have faced action, with at least five officials suspended, including three recently and four to five previously. The process of transferring officials suspected of being involved in irregularities while remaining in the same position for an extended period has also begun to prevent them from consolidating power in one place.
A comprehensive investigation and strict action campaign has been initiated regarding this entire matter. In the future, it is expected that FIRs will be filed, and further revelations about the large-scale fake birth certificate scam will emerge. The 87,347 fraudulent birth certificates identified in Mumbai point to a significant conspiracy.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya stated, “The mafia has ruled in BMC for 29 years, involving many corrupt officials. They have once again committed irregularities within the system. The Mayor has issued orders in today’s meeting, and the Chief Minister has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Action will be taken against every corrupt municipal officer and mafia contractor.”
Somaiya added, “These are illegal infiltrators without documents who have obtained fake birth certificates. Thousands of infiltrators have been identified; there is no doubt about it. But this is all wrong, and it is a reality. This SIT will be coming in the next two years, and we have uncovered a large-scale conspiracy and scam involving the acquisition of fake birth certificates. In Mumbai, 87,347 such birth certificates were issued through illegal processes. The municipality has acknowledged today that these certificates were issued incorrectly. The Mayor has ordered their cancellation.”
