Mumbai, March 30: In the second match of IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets on Sunday. However, it was a disappointing debut for Afghanistan’s spinner Allah Gajnafar, who set an unwanted record for the second most expensive spell in IPL history.
Gajnafar bowled four overs against KKR, conceding 51 runs without taking a wicket, resulting in an economy rate of 12.80. The record for the most expensive debut spell is held by Ray Barman, who gave away 56 runs in four overs while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019. Gajnafar struggled with his line and length, allowing KKR’s batsmen to capitalize on his errors. Mumbai acquired him for ₹4.80 crore in the IPL 2025 auction and retained him for IPL 2026.
At Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Indians maintained their impressive record against KKR. Batting first, KKR scored 220 runs for the loss of four wickets in their 20 overs. Captain Ajinkya Rahane played a strong innings, scoring 67 runs off 40 balls, while Ankur Raghuwanshi added 51 runs from 29 balls. Finn Allen also made a quick impact, scoring 37 runs off just 17 balls. However, Mumbai’s bowlers struggled on their home ground, with Jasprit Bumrah conceding 35 runs in four overs without taking a wicket, and Hardik Pandya giving away 39 runs in three overs. Trent Boult also went wicketless, allowing 38 runs in four overs.
Chasing a target of 221 runs, Mumbai achieved their goal in 19.1 overs, losing four wickets. Rohit Sharma led the charge with a blistering 78 runs off 38 balls, while Ryan Rickelton contributed an impressive 81 runs off 43 balls. The duo added 81 runs for the first wicket in just 11.5 overs, putting the match firmly in Mumbai’s favor. Tilak Varma scored 20 runs off 14 balls, and Hardik Pandya finished unbeaten with 18 runs, including three fours.
