Monsoon Forecast Update: Heatwaves, Rain, and Thunderstorms to Impact Multiple Indian States – Here’s What to Expect

New Delhi, March 30, 2025 — As India transitions into the pre-monsoon season, weather conditions across the country are showing extreme variations, with heatwaves scorching some regions while others witness unseasonal rain and thunderstorms, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). With temperatures soaring in several parts of the country, the IMD has issued alerts and forecasts to help residents prepare for changing weather patterns.

Heatwave

Heatwaves Grip Northern and Central India

Rajasthan and Bihar are currently under heatwave warnings, as temperatures continue to soar above normal levels. Daytime heat has intensified, especially in western Rajasthan, with mercury levels crossing the 40°C mark in isolated areas. IMD predicts that the heatwave conditions may persist until April 3, followed by dry weather from April 4 to April 10 across most parts of North and Central India.

Rain and Thunderstorm Activity in the East and South

The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, driven by a Western Disturbance. These regions are also expected to experience thunderstorms and strong winds, contributing to a noticeable drop in temperatures.

In Southern India, a north-south trough extending from northern interior Karnataka to southern Tamil Nadu is expected to bring isolated heavy showers. States like Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and parts of coastal Gujarat are likely to experience intermittent rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next few days.

Relief in Delhi-NCR with Cooler Winds

Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) have seen a temporary respite from the heat due to cool morning and evening winds. While the day temperatures remain high, the IMD notes a short-term dip in minimum temperatures, offering some relief.

However, temperatures in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are expected to rise again by April 1, marking the start of a more intense summer phase.

States Under Weather Watch:

  • Arunachal Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim Heavy rain, thunderstorms

  • Rajasthan, Bihar Heatwave conditions

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Gujarat Isolated heavy rainfall

  • Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh Strong winds, temporary drop in temperatures

What to Expect in April

IMD’s forecast for early April suggests below-normal rainfall in most regions until April 3, followed by a spell of dry and hot weather between April 4 and 10. With summer intensifying, authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid peak afternoon hours, and remain updated with regional weather advisories.
