Hyderabad, April 27: Mohammad Azharuddin, the Minister for Minority Welfare in Telangana, along with Professor M. Kodandaram Reddy, took the oath as members of the state Legislative Council (MLC) on Monday.
The oath was administered by Council Chairman G. Sukender Reddy during a ceremony held at the Assembly building. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with his cabinet ministers, Telangana Congress President Mahesh Kumar Goud, and other party leaders were present at the event.
Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla appointed Azharuddin and Kodandaram Reddy as members of the Legislative Council from the governor’s quota on Sunday. However, according to the government’s notification, this appointment will depend on the final decisions regarding all pending appeals related to the matter.
The notification indicated that both were appointed to replace D. Rajeshwar Rao and Farooq Hussain, whose terms ended on May 27, 2023.
Azharuddin, a former Indian cricket captain, becoming an MLC is seen as a relief for the ruling Congress party. He took the oath as a minister on October 31, 2025, and it was essential for him to become a member of the Assembly or Legislative Council by April 30 to continue in his ministerial role.
With these appointments, a long-standing uncertainty has been resolved. The Telangana Cabinet had recommended the names of Azharuddin and Kodandaram for nomination to the Legislative Council under the governor’s quota on August 30, 2025.
However, the governor had not approved these nominations due to a pending case in the Supreme Court. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met with the governor on April 19 to request approval for the pending nominations.
Last month, the Chief Minister referenced a comment made by the Supreme Court, stating that the court had no objections in this matter and that the state government could proceed with seeking the governor’s approval.
