New Delhi, April 29: The heat wave across the country is intensifying rapidly. In the last week of April, temperatures in several states have soared significantly above normal levels. According to the meteorological department, even more extreme heat is expected in the coming days. This scorching heat can have serious health implications for individuals. Therefore, it is crucial to take precautions in a timely manner.
The Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, has urged the public to adopt necessary measures to prevent heat-related illnesses. The ministry states that these illnesses can be avoided if appropriate steps are taken promptly.
Firstly, do not be negligent about your health amid the extreme heat and rising temperatures. If you feel unwell, immediately seek a cool place, drink plenty of water, and stay well-hydrated. Keep an eye on your body temperature and consult a doctor without delay if needed.
The most common issues arising from the heat include heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone suddenly feels unwell, experiences dizziness, muscle cramps, excessive sweating, or a cessation of sweating, these should be considered serious symptoms. Health experts recommend immediate actions in such cases.
Move the affected person to a cool and ventilated area, continuously monitor their body temperature, and consume electrolyte-rich fluids such as lemonade, salt-sugar solutions, buttermilk, or oral rehydration solutions (ORS). Along with plain water, ensure hydration with electrolytes. Seek medical assistance promptly if symptoms worsen and contact a doctor.
The Ministry of Ayush has advised people to wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing during the summer. Avoid going out in the sun between 12 PM and 4 PM, and ensure adequate ventilation indoors. Health experts emphasize that children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions are at the highest risk from the heat. Therefore, special care is essential for these vulnerable groups.
