Srinagar, June 2: Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has urged all political parties in Jammu and Kashmir to set aside their differences and unite for meaningful dialogue with the central government.
Mufti emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is at a critical juncture, where an atmosphere of despair and uncertainty is affecting the future of its people. She believes that political leaders must rise above party politics to create a common platform for the public’s benefit.
In a post shared on the social media platform ‘X’, Mufti stated that genuine and ongoing discussions with the Indian government are essential for restoring peace, security, and dignity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She mentioned that she has written to key leaders, including Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, BJP leader Sunil Sharma, and Congress’s Tariq Karra, requesting a joint meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
In her letter, she pointed out that the recent successes achieved through dialogue between the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance with the central government demonstrate that meaningful solutions can emerge from conversations. She stressed that broad political consensus is necessary to resolve the current political deadlock in Jammu and Kashmir and to restore public trust.
Mufti noted that the long-standing rivalry and political competition among regional parties, particularly since 2019, have harmed the collective interests of Jammu and Kashmir. She urged all parties to rise above political gains and losses to protect the rights and dignity of the people.
She also requested the Chief Minister to convene a formal meeting of all political parties to devise a shared strategy for initiating dialogue with the central government. Mufti asserted that this is not the time for political credit-seeking but for working together for the greater good of the public.
Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter and PDP leader Iltija Mufti supported this initiative. She remarked that the example of unity set by the political leadership in Ladakh should serve as a lesson for Jammu and Kashmir’s leaders. Iltija lamented that state politics has often been marred by internal conflicts and disagreements, while the current circumstances demand unified efforts.
She stated that only through continuous and meaningful dialogue can the rights, dignity, and constitutional protections of the people of Jammu and Kashmir be restored. Iltija urged all political parties to support Mehbooba Mufti’s appeal and work together towards dialogue with the central government.
Mehbooba Mufti concluded her message by expressing hope that if various organizations in Ladakh can unite for common interests to engage in dialogue with the center, then so can the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir. She expressed optimism that all parties would work together towards building a peaceful, dignified, and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir.
