Shillong, April 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated on Friday that efforts are ongoing to enhance infrastructure, ensure teacher availability, and guarantee equal access to quality education, particularly in rural and remote areas.
Addressing a ceremony at the Babelapara Higher Secondary School in the South West Garo Hills, Sangma highlighted that education remains the top priority of his government. He emphasized the need for a “strong and future-oriented approach” to address existing shortcomings in the system.
The Chief Minister introduced the “Structured Pay Framework” (SPF) for teachers on fixed salaries, aimed at creating a transparent, fair, and sustainable pay system. This initiative is expected to improve service conditions and provide associated social security benefits.
Sangma noted that enhancing the entire education system is crucial for empowering youth and driving long-term socio-economic development in the state. He mentioned that an initial investment of approximately ₹2,000 crores is required for upgrading lower primary schools. This initiative began with 100 schools and is being implemented in phases.
In a significant announcement, he approved ₹20 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Development Fund to meet the infrastructure and developmental needs of Babelapara Higher Secondary School.
The event was organized by the school in collaboration with its School Management Committee and the All Meghalaya Upper Primary and Secondary Deficit Pattern School Teachers Association, primarily to honor the Chief Minister for the SPF initiative.
Previously, the school administration highlighted challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and financial constraints, appealing for government support to improve facilities and the teaching-learning environment.
Legislator Ian Botham K. Sangma stated that under the Chief Minister’s leadership, the state government is continuously focusing on strengthening the education sector, especially in rural areas with limited facilities. He reiterated that efforts to enhance infrastructure, improve teaching quality, and expand access to education are ongoing.
Several officials attended the program, including MDC Rakesh A. Sangma, Deputy Commissioner Ananya Rajshree, Superintendent of Police Vikas Verma, and other district officials.
