Mumbai, April 8: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is set to inaugurate the ‘Ravi Shastri Stand’ at the historic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, honoring four cricket legends of Indian cricket. Additionally, three gates at the stadium will be dedicated to former cricketers.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be the chief guest at the ceremony. MCA President Ajinkya Naik, Apex Council members, officials, and several prominent figures from the cricketing world will also be present. The decision to honor these cricketers was made during an Apex Council meeting held in February.
As part of this initiative, the Level-1 stand located below the press box will be named after former Indian captain and renowned commentator Ravi Shastri. This recognition is for his exceptional contributions as a player, captain, and coach to Mumbai and Indian cricket.
Moreover, gates number 3, 5, and 6 will be dedicated to Dilip Sardesai, Diana Edulji, and Eknath Solkar, respectively. All three players have been pillars of Mumbai cricket and have made significant contributions to Indian cricket.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik expressed that this ceremony is a proud moment for Mumbai cricket. He stated that the event, scheduled for April 9, aims to honor the legacy of these great players and inspire future generations.
This initiative also reflects MCA’s commitment to preserving its rich cricketing history while laying a strong foundation for the future. Notably, in May 2025, MCA inaugurated a stand named after former Indian captain and T20 World Cup winner Rohit Sharma. Additionally, stands named after Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Sachin Tendulkar already exist at Wankhede Stadium, while gates have been named after legends like Polly Umrigar and Vinu Mankad.
